The internet has lots of reviews of this book which compare it unfavourably with the Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, which it replaces. That publication went through 9 editions and in the end it contained 14,000 jazz CDs which were available at the time. Most of the criticism of the Penguin Jazz Guide is that it only refers to 1,001 jazz CDs and that rather than a comprehensive and definitive guide to everything available to buy in the UK, it's now a chronological history of jazz, with album choices for each decade from the 1910s to 2010 which some reviewers find inexplicable and incomplete. As a newcomer I was looking for a book that would give me an introduction to jazz and point me towards key albums from across the decades. There is so much jazz out there and life is too short, so any guide to important or essential recordings is exactly what I need to get started. The only real problem with this guide is that it was published in 2010 and it refers to CDs available at that date. Obviously that's already 14 years ago, and ideally what I'd like is a regularly updated guide to jazz I can hear on Spotify. In practice a lot (perhaps most?) of the CDs in the guide are on there and presumably on other streaming platforms, and for everything released since 2010 I'll need to look elsewhere. As far as this book goes it's a good starting point, and I'm enjoying the description of each CD, the details about the musicians and the quotes obtained for each album from people who were involved. I could go and buy a secondhand copy of the 9th edition mentioned above, but for now I'll use this book together with '100 Jazz Albums That Shook The World' from the publisher of Jazzwise magazine and album lists like those on the Mosaic Records and All Music Guide websites.
